The Rosary of St. Joseph

The Rosary of St. Joseph

The Rosary of St. Joseph uses the regular beads of the Marian rosary, but substitutes various prayers and mysteries to honour the foster-father of Jesus.

Prayer Text

On the crucifix: +In the Name of the father, and the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.

On the First Large Bead: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed bethy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

On the Three Small Beads for Purity, Fidelity and Humility: Hail Joseph, Son of David, spouse of Mary. Blessed art thou among patriarchs, and blessed is Thy Holy Family. Holy Joseph, Guardian of Jesus, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.

After the Three Small Beads: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.

Large beads: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Small beads: Hail Joseph, Son of David, spouse of Mary. Blessed art thou among patriarchs, and blessed is Thy Holy Family. Holy Joseph, Guardian of Jesus, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.

For each decade of small beads, it is customary to meditate on events in the life of Joseph, similar to what the Oblates of St. Joseph list on their website.

Betrothal to Mary (Mt 1:18).
Annunciation to Joseph (Mt 1:19-21).
Birth and Naming of Jesus (Mt 1:22-25).
Flight into Egypt (Mt 2:13-15).
Hidden Life at Nazareth (Mt 2:23; Lk 2:51-52).

Other mysteries that can be substituted for these mysteries are the “Finding of Jesus in the Temple,” the “Death of St. Joseph” and the “Coronation of St. Joseph in Heaven.”

After the Ten Small Beads: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.

After All 5 Mysteries: O Blessed Joseph, yours the praise The choirs of angels sing, The guardian of the Virgin blest, And of her Child and King. The prophets told of God to come: The Son of God on earth; Yours was the glory then to be There at the Saviour’s birth. To him, the Father’s only Son You served as father here; He was subjected to your will He, whom the heavens revere. As once you sought and found again The Christ, the Lord of light; So may we walk with him, like you All humble in his sight. O Father, Son and Holy Ghost, The God of truth and grace, By holy Joseph’s prayers grant That we may see your face.

V. Pray for us O Blessed Joseph
R. that we may be mode worthy of the promises of Christ

Concluding Prayer: Almighty and eternal God, grant, we beseech thee, that by meditating upon the mysteries of the Rosary of Saint Joseph, we may imitate his prayful trust, and faithfully carry out your holy will, despite difficulties, uncertainties, and fears. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen

Praise be Jesus Christ, now and forever.

Chastity Cord of St Joseph

Chastity Cord of St Joseph

Prayer Text

The White Cord of Saint Joseph can be worn around the waist for purity or around the shoulders for obedience. It has seven knots indicating the Seven Joys and Sorrows of St. Joseph. Any priest can bless the girdle, after which when worn for the first time, enrolls one in the Archconfraternity of the Cord of Saint Joseph; the formula “Priest’s Blessing of a Cincture” found in the Roman Ritual can be used for this.

The Archconfraternity of the cord of St Joseph: the miraculous cure of an Augustinian nun in 1657 gave rise to the pious practice of wearing it to obtain the grace of purity through his intercession. Pius IX approved a special formula for blessing of the cord of St. Joseph (see 1964 Roman Ritual).

Prayer to St. Joseph to be said after the Rosary

Prayer Text

To thee, O blessed Joseph, we have recourse in our affliction, and having implored the help of thy thrice holy Spouse, we now, with hearts filled with confidence, earnestly beg thee also to take us under thy protection. By that charity, wherewith thou were united to the Immaculate Virgin, Mother of God, and by that fatherly love, with which thou didst cherish the Child Jesus, we beseech thee and we humbly pray that thou wilt look down with gracious eyes upon that inheritance which Jesus Christ purchased by His Blood, and wilt succor us in our need by thy power and strength. Defend, O most watchful guardian of the Holy family, the chosen offspring of Jesus Christ. Keep from us, O most loving Father, all blight of error and corruption. Aid us from on high, most valiant defender, in this conflict with the powers of darkness, and even as of old, thou didst rescue the Child Jesus from the peril of His life, so no defend God’s Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity. Shield us ever under thy patronage, that, imitating thy example and strengthened by thy help, we may live a holy life, die a happy death, and attain everlasting bliss in Heaven. Amen.
