NOVENA TO ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI

Day 1

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Poor and humble Saint Francis, through your kind intercession we seek to love God above all things. We seek the faith, hope and love that moved you to joyfully renounce honors and riches and to radically follow our Lord Jesus Christ.

Pray for us that we come to see the privilege of suffering with and for the poor after the example of Jesus. Help us to be always grateful for all the blessings we have received and give us the strength to overcome our most pressing concerns.

(Include your personal intentions now.)

St. Francis, as you left a comfortable life to lead a life of poverty and service to others, we ask you to pray that we also realize the folly of seeking to amass material wealth and gain power and control over others less fortunate than we are. Today I humbly give something that I don’t really need to the poor as an offering to God our Father, hoping this act signals a start of my conversion.

St. Francis, help us to continue praying for the grace to truly repent and change our hearts by actively seeking reconciliation with God and all those we have offended or hurt in any way. May the blessings we receive through your intercession deepen our faith, and inspire us to store up treasures in Heaven, where we hope to spend eternity with our loving God.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen

St. Francis of Assisi, Pray for us!

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,

Amen.

Reflection: St. Francis, a wealthy young man, scorned beggars until he realized they, too, were God’s children. He vowed never again to refuse anyone who asked him something in God’s name.

God calls you, as he did St. Francis, to undergo a “conversion” experience. Many times in our lives we see the face of God in others, yet do not act. When we rise above our natural feelings and extend a small kindness, whether a helping hand, a smile, or a phone call, we are the ones who are blessed.

Action: Today, find your conversion opportunity, and then be kind to someone who needs you.

Day 2

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Poor and humble Saint Francis, through your kind intercession we seek to love God above all things. We seek the faith, hope and love that moved you to joyfully renounce honors and riches and to radically follow our Lord Jesus Christ.

Pray for us that we come to see the privilege of suffering with and for the poor after the example of Jesus. Help us to be always grateful for all the blessings we have received and give us the strength to overcome our most pressing concerns.

(Include your personal intentions now.)

Seraphic St. Francis, when you decided to walk in the footsteps of our Lord Jesus Christ you entrusted your whole life to his Divine Providence. Inspired and encouraged by your example, I resolve to entrust the favorable resolution of my situation to God our Father, through your most kind intercession.

Amen.

Reflection: Francis was graced with a generous heart, but he sometimes used God’s gifts incorrectly. During his conversion God showed him how to use his gifts of generosity in a new way.

As you open your heart to be transformed by God’s great love, He will guide you to a new understanding of how to use your gifts wisely.

Action: Today, thank God for the many ways He has graced you.

Day 3

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Poor and humble Saint Francis, through your kind intercession we seek to love God above all things. We seek the faith, hope and love that moved you to joyfully renounce honors and riches and to radically follow our Lord Jesus Christ.

Pray for us that we come to see the privilege of suffering with and for the poor after the example of Jesus. Help us to be always grateful for all the blessings we have received and give us the strength to overcome our most pressing concerns.

(Include your personal intentions now.)

Glorious St. Francis, you acted as a peacemaker even in the face of extreme physical danger. Through your prayers, may we also be graced with the desire to find peaceful resolutions to the problems that plague us, even in the most trying of times. As an offering to our Loving God, I resolve to forgive all the wrongs I have suffered from others.

Amen.

Reflection: Francis had to grow in holiness. He had a great fear and loathing of lepers. He would ride away quickly so as not to speak to them. One day he asked himself, “Is this what Jesus would do?” And inspired by the answer he knew in his heart to be true, he began to care for those less fortunate and trusted in God to care for him in return.

Can I change my response to the “lepers” in my life? Will I find the face of Christ?

Action: Today, consider how, with God’s help, you can change your attitude.

Day 4

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Poor and humble Saint Francis, through your kind intercession we seek to love God above all things. We seek the faith, hope and love that moved you to joyfully renounce honors and riches and to radically follow our Lord Jesus Christ.

Pray for us that we come to see the privilege of suffering with and for the poor after the example of Jesus. Help us to be always grateful for all the blessings we have received and give us the strength to overcome our most pressing concerns.

(Include your personal intentions now.)

Holy St. Francis, your concern for God’s creation caused you to be named patron of ecology. May we, through your prayers, follow your footsteps in being good stewards of all of creation which God our Creator has provided. May we also be faithful stewards of the skills and abilities we have been given.

Amen.

Reflection: While Francis was in church praying, he heard God say, “Go Francis, and restore my church.” Francis immediately went out and began to move stones and to beg for supplies. Another word for prayer is relationship – if we spend time in prayer listening to God, He will speak to us.

If I want God to answer my prayers then I must be as ready as St. Francis to respond to God when he calls me into action.

Action: Spend five minutes in “relationship” with God today.

Day 5

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Poor and humble Saint Francis, through your kind intercession we seek to love God above all things. We seek the faith, hope and love that moved you to joyfully renounce honors and riches and to radically follow our Lord Jesus Christ.

Pray for us that we come to see the privilege of suffering with and for the poor after the example of Jesus. Help us to be always grateful for all the blessings we have received and give us the strength to overcome our most pressing concerns.

(Include your personal intentions now.)

Blessed St. Francis, when you were blessed with the decision to serve our Lord, you abandoned everything and surrendered yourself totally to God’s will. Obtain for us the same trust in God, that the Holy Spirit may guide our every thought, word and deed.

Amen.

Reflection: Francis heard God tell him to build his church and immediately he found a run down church in need of repair, Portiuncula, or “Little Portion”. As Francis heeded the call, his simple response grew as more and more people volunteered to help him. Out of one simple man’s actions God created the Order of Franciscans, the order of the Sisters of St. Clare, and had His Church around the world reborn.

Hearing God’s voice, I must listen, follow, and with His Grace, see amazing things happen.

Action: Today, listen to what God has been telling you and get started!

Day 6

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Poor and humble Saint Francis, through your kind intercession we seek to love God above all things. We seek the faith, hope and love that moved you to joyfully renounce honors and riches and to radically follow our Lord Jesus Christ.

Pray for us that we come to see the privilege of suffering with and for the poor after the example of Jesus. Help us to be always grateful for all the blessings we have received and give us the strength to overcome our most pressing concerns.

(Include your personal intentions now.)

Holy St. Francis, through your prayers, may we be blessed with the desire to give all of our strength and abilities towards serving God’s purpose in our lives. May our lives be filled with complete faith and the hope of spending eternity with the Most High, all-powerful good God.

Amen.

Reflection: Francis was determined to belong totally to God and so gave away his belongings to do just that. Pride is sometimes the hardest thing to discard in our Christian walk; perhaps that is what Francis did when he threw off his clothes.

What is it that I have to give up to be able to follow Christ as Francis did?

Action: What do I fear most? Today I offer it to God.

Day 7

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Poor and humble Saint Francis, through your kind intercession we seek to love God above all things. We seek the faith, hope and love that moved you to joyfully renounce honors and riches and to radically follow our Lord Jesus Christ.

Pray for us that we come to see the privilege of suffering with and for the poor after the example of Jesus. Help us to be always grateful for all the blessings we have received and give us the strength to overcome our most pressing concerns.

(Include your personal intentions now.)

Humble and loving St. Francis, you were untiring in your service to the poor. Obtain for us the same heart for mercy and the desire to give of ourselves in the hope that we may one day be blessed with the promises of Christ

Francis was not the most popular of saints during his lifetime, and was considered a fool for giving up his money, position and way of life, to help the poor. Today, he is the Patron Saint of the Environment and Animals, and people of many faiths know him and respect him.

In many ways our daily decisions are silent witness to our commitment to living a Christian life.

Action: What change can I make to help my environment today?

Day 8

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Poor and humble Saint Francis, through your kind intercession we seek to love God above all things. We seek the faith, hope and love that moved you to joyfully renounce honors and riches and to radically follow our Lord Jesus Christ.

Pray for us that we come to see the privilege of suffering with and for the poor after the example of Jesus. Help us to be always grateful for all the blessings we have received and give us the strength to overcome our most pressing concerns.

(Include your personal intentions now.)

Holy St. Francis, you spent your life preaching and living the Gospel and won over many people to God. We beseech you to have pity on us poor sinners, that through your intercession, God may grant that our doubts be replaced with the certainty that the Holy Spirit will continue to guide us through life’s many trials towards God’s eternal kingdom.

Francis lived a simple life devoted to the love of God. He was always growing in his faith and in his love for others. Loving as Jesus did is often hard work, and can only be accomplished by recognizing God’s love for us.

How do I show God’s love for my family, friends, co-workers and strangers?

Action: Be a loving presence to others today.

Day 9

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Poor and humble Saint Francis, through your kind intercession we seek to love God above all things. We seek the faith, hope and love that moved you to joyfully renounce honors and riches and to radically follow our Lord Jesus Christ.

Pray for us that we come to see the privilege of suffering with and for the poor after the example of Jesus. Help us to be always grateful for all the blessings we have received and give us the strength to overcome our most pressing concerns.

(Include your personal intentions now.)

Almighty Father, through the kind intercession of St. Francis, we humbly ask for the grace to be free of the fears and anxieties that beset us.

Francis’ community was built on the spirit of “fraternity” and many said “See how they love one another.” It is in how I relate to others, how I treat others and how I walk in faith with others, that shows whether or not I am a follower of Christ.

Action: Today, think about how you live as a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish and of the wider community.
